Floris United Methodist Church in Herndon, Virginia currently has an opening for a Traditional Music Director. The primary responsibility of this position is to execute the Pastoral Staff's strategic vision for worship by participating in the weekly development and execution of worship at traditional services, promoting and encouraging Christian spiritual formation in choirs, and delivering a consistent, spiritual music experience for parishioners and guests who attend these services. Following the strategic guidance of the Director of Worship, the Traditional Music Director will manage the music program for traditional worship services on Sundays at 8:00AM and 11:00AM, and special services. This position is responsible for directing the employees and volunteers dedicated to sharing at these services and will issue assignments, and review the work of staff and volunteers in such areas as scoring, arranging, copying music and vocal coaching. The Traditional Music Director serves as Choral Director by directing adult and student choral groups at rehearsals and services to achieve desired effects, such as tonal and harmonic balance, dynamics, rhythm and tempo. Auditions and selects vocal and instrumental groups for musical presentations. Plans and schedules rehearsals and works with accompanists, conducts guest soloists and ensemble groups, and plans and implements special events. The Traditional Music Director removes the Director of Worship from any administrative burdens of the adult and student choirs, the accompanist and the bell choir director by directing the daily business operations of these groups to include, but not limited to, performing administrative tasks such as developing budgets, organizing rehearsals, organizing and maintaining the music library, overseeing the music equipment inventory (including instruments and robes), managing volunteers, and recruiting other participants. Qualifications and Aptitudes BA or equivalent in music with an emphasis in vocal or choral direction. A minimum of 6 years serving as music director using a diverse set of musical styles and experiences that demonstrates having administrative and management skills to manage a large and expanding music program, including the management of singers and other musicians. Ability to play a musical instrument, preferably the organ and/ or piano. Ability to transcribe musical compositions and melodic lines to adapt them to or create particular style for group. Knowledge of the United Methodist hymnals and the importance of music in worship and Christian spiritual development in the United Methodist tradition.
