Ogden Memorial Presbyterian Church in Chatham, NJ is seeking an energetic Director of Music to enhance the Sunday worship service and create an environment of spirited worship through music. The Director of Music will be responsible for direction of an Adult Choir, Children's Choir, and the Ogden (Youth) Rock Band. He or she will also perform organ and piano music during Sunday services, and provide music during worship services for Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and any additional special services that may arise.
Responsibilities:
1. Rehearse Adult Choir members weekly, in preparation for the worship service.
2. Plan, prepare, and play music appropriate to each service of worship, including an intergenerational service the second Sunday of every month.
3. Accompany the congregation in singing of hymns.
4. Consult with the Pastor and the Worship and Music Committee regarding the theme of each service of worship, selection of hymns, choral and instrumental music.
5. Arrange for soloists and instrumentalists to support the Choirs and Sunday worship, with the help of the Worship and Music Committee.
6. In consultation with Pastor, arrange for coverage by a fill-in organist in the event of vacation or illness.
7. Lead the Ogden Youth Choir (OYC) and Ogden Rock Band (ORB) by choosing music in conjunction with the theme of worship, leading weekly rehearsals, and directing the performance of the choirs.
8. Provide music during special worship services.
Accountability:
Accountable to the Session through the Pastor as Head of Staff and the Worship and Music Committee.
Evaluation:
The Pastor and Personnel Committee of Session will conduct a performance evaluation after the first 6 months of employment (annually thereafter) with consultation from the Worship and Music Committee.
Terms:
This is a part-time position requiring no fewer than 15 hours per week with 2 weeks vacation and 1 week study leave.
Qualifications:
1. Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Music or a related field, or equivalent experience. Excellent organization and communication skills. Obvious skills in organ and piano performance and worship leadership.
2. Obvious skills in the selection of music and the direction of Choirs with a specialization in traditional choral and instrumental music but an ability to blend the best of other genres including spirituals and contemporary music.
3. Knowledge of the Christian faith and the willingness to incorporate this into the musical experience of all choir participants. A sincere commitment and love for human beings, and an ability to work with all ages, especially children. A deep sense of the value of worship and how music can enhance worship.
